OSMD Staffing Model

Common Questions

1. What is Open Source MD?

We created Open Source MD specifically to restore the collaborative partnership between hospitals and physicians. We act as a liaison between the two and will help design a model that realigns the goals of your facility with those of the  providers.

2. How does Open Source MD work?

We will design a staffing model that meets the unique needs of your facility. Once a model has been developed, OSMD will recruit the physicians who will become regular members of your hospital staff. There are no recruitment fees, relocation costs or retention bonuses.

3. Why should hospitals choose OSMD?

Hospitals that want to reduce costs, improve revenues, and remove dysfunction from their hospitalist program utilize our services. In addition, OSMD can staff according to expected seasonal variations in hospital volumes, typically higher in winter months and lower in summer months. Our physicians work a seven-on, seven-off schedule, which promotes continuity and quality care. Providers are highly skilled in documentation, which improves hospital revenues.

4. Can OSMD provide hospitalists on a temporary basis?

Our solutions are not a temporary fix. We focus on solving the problems your hospital faces and design a staffing model to fit the characteristics of your facility. From an operational standpoint, OSMD-affiliated physicians are no different than a W-2 employee.

5. How does OSMD handle scheduling & coverage?

We create a schedule for every quarter of the year that is published no less than 90 days ahead of the three-month block. For example, the schedule for July through September is published on April 1st.The contract between the hospital and physician has a clause that allows the hospital to invoice the physician $3,000 per shift if they no show, which gives you assurance that coverage will always be available. In the event of an emergency, we will work with the hospital to secure coverage in real time.

6. Are the hospitalists provided by OSMD licensed & insured?

Yes, we recruit physicians that are board certified in many specialties including internal medicine, family medicine, palm crit and nephrology. All providers carry their own medical malpractice insurance.

7. What does a relationship with OSMD look like?

By providing stable, cost-efficient physician service lines, we help your hospital work with physicians to implement process, quality, and strategic improvement initiatives to help your hospital reach its goals.

8. What’s the difference between Locums & OSMD?

We are a long-term staffing solution. Our service provides immediate staffing stability that is sustainable. We focus on providing quality physicians that are committed to a long-term relationship with your facility. They will be regular members of the medical staff and want to be treated as such. Because of this long-term relationship, the premium cost associated with Locum Tenens is eliminated, making our model a budget-neutral option.

9. How much does OSMD cost the hospital?

The hospital pays the physicians directly, which is the only cost to your hospital. Our physicians pay OSMD for the business services related to their professional practice and the logistics that are needed for them to work at your hospital.

10. Who manages the hospitalists once working with the hospital?

Your program director will manage any physicians we board at your facility. If we are asked to manage the program, you will appoint one of the members of the physician group to act as the medical director.
